Luminaria Night in Washington Park

We are thrilled to be asked by neighbors, friends and clients to bring back the Luminaria night for a third year.  Last year we gifted 4,000 LED flicker candles, 2,000 bags and sand to the homes bordering the park in an attempt to create a ring of light to “push back” the shortest Sunday of the year.  75% of the homes - a full 1,500 candles – were put out through the voluntary efforts of your neighbors on the park.

We are going to repeat our effort this year and welcome one and all to participate.  We can not possibly provide LED candles and bags to everyone in 80209, but we encourage all in the area to help push back the night with us on December 18 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  LED candles and bags are available at many retail outlets.  If requested, I can post a number of resources for you here.

If you can’t put luminaria out, ask a neighbor to help you.  Do you have a neighbor who needs help?  Offer assistance.  This is a wonderful opportunity to build bridges, connect with new people and invite friends from all over the city to come over to your house for a cup of cocoa and a stroll around our favorite park.  Last year there were spontaneous carolers and other holiday cheer throughout 80209.  It was a wonderful to witness.

I am a Realtor™ who serves the area and will enjoy working with many of you in the coming years.  My wife and I and our two dogs love Washington Park.  This is our gift to you, our neighbors.

This year we are pleased to have Gold Leaf Caregivers underwrite a portion of the event.  President David Geras is a great guy, and he offers these words:

“The holidays are a time for family gatherings, happy times, and fond memories made in your own home.  When a person faces a health challenge, everything that used to matter, no longer does, and it’s the littlest things that become the most meaningful.  An extra pair of hands.  A ready ear. Someone to listen, someone to  care.

GoldLeaf CareGivers can provide you with everything you need in exceptional home care because we know the right home care can really make a difference in a person’s quality of life. Home is not only where the heart is, but also where our minds feel most at peace and our bodies feel most at rest.

“Call us to see how we can provide you with peace of mind in the comfort of your own home.”

Last Year’s Announcement

There is something so soothing and beautiful about candlelight around the holidays that it’s hard to put into words.

Returning to my childhood home in Chicago for Christmas last year, I drove around the neighboring suburbs with my folks to admire the holiday lights.  One of the suburbs stuck in my mind with its remarkable display of a sense of community~ the sidewalks of five whole blocks were ablaze with the candlelight of luminaria, candles anchored in sand in paper bags.

Inspired by this display as well as our neighbors’ mutual and profound love of the Wash Park community, we have decided to sponsor the First Annual Luminaria Night in Wash Park on the Sunday before the shortest day of the year.

During the week prior, we are going to pay for and hand deliver LED candles and bags to every home bordering Wash Park.  We would like to encourage our Wash Park neighbors to join us as we “push back the night” with light, joy and holiday cheer.  If you can not be home on this day, perhaps you could reach out to your neighbors and ask them to light your candles for you and pick them up the next morning.  this could be a great day to make hot chocolate, cider and Christmas cookies and invite friends over to walk around the park with you and enjoy the power of 210 people acting in concert with one goal ~ create beauty and spread holiday cheer.

During our first annual event, the LED candles and bags are being provided to residents that touch/border the park. There is no need to “open” your house to the general public, we merely are giving you an occasion to invite your own friends and neighbors over, should you desire. The “walk” is not a formal walk per se, but rather just a time when folks from all over can stroll on our walking path and admire the efforts put forth by all who choose to light their front sidewalks with luminaria.

While distributing candles to homes on Washington Park, I’ve been asked “Where do I put these?” The vision is for 10 candles running the width of your property alongside the sidewalk to form a continuous ring. I understand that folks will do many different variations of this and have even been given the head’s up that a fun resident near Ohio and Downing is buying even more luminaria to really light up his home.

We thank you, in advance, for helping us fulfill this dream this year and look forward to meeting you as we notify you of the event and distribute the luminaria materials.  With your help, we will continue and grow this tradition next year.

Sincerely,
~ Rick Janson
